Why does water roll off lotus leaves in round beads?

Because microscopic bumps and a waxy coating make the surface wonderfully water-repellent. A lotus leaf looks smooth, but it's covered in tiny bumps coated with wax. Water only touches the very tips, so droplets bead up and roll straight off, sweeping away dust as they go.
