Why do cacao pods grow straight from the trunk?

Because cacao flowers and fruits grow on special cushions right along the older wood. Most fruit grows on small twigs, but cacao is unusual: it flowers straight on trunks and mature branches. Tiny flowers sprout from permanent pads in the bark, and once pollinated, they develop into heavy pods the strong trunk can easily support.
