Why are many vanilla flowers pollinated by hand?
Because farmed vanilla often grows far from the pollinators that would naturally visit it. Vanilla orchids first grew in the Americas, but today they're farmed in many other regions too. Each flower opens for only a short time, so farmers gently use a small tool to move pollen inside by hand.
