Human Body
Why can you still see a colour after looking away?
Because light-sensitive cells in your eyes briefly respond differently after strong stimulation. Stare at one strong colour and certain cone cells work harder than others. When you look at a pale surface, those cells are temporarily less responsive. The balance of signals shifts, so your brain may create a ghostly afterimage in a contrasting colour.
