Why do we have tonsils at the back of the throat?

Because tonsils are immune tissues positioned where many germs first enter. Tonsils contain cells that recognise germs arriving through the mouth and nose. They sample material passing the throat and help the immune system respond, especially early in life. Other immune tissues can still work if troublesome tonsils must be removed.
