Why are babies' kneecaps softer than adults' kneecaps?
Because much of the kneecap begins as cartilage and hardens into bone later. The patella, or kneecap, starts mainly as flexible cartilage. As a child grows, centres of bone form and expand inside it through a process called ossification. The kneecap gradually becomes harder while continuing to protect and guide the knee joint.
