Why can't tooth enamel heal itself like skin?
Because mature enamel has no living cells left to rebuild damaged areas. Enamel is the extremely hard outer coating of a tooth. The cells that originally make it disappear after the tooth develops. Without living enamel-making cells or a blood supply, a chipped or decayed area cannot regrow the way wounded skin can.
