Why do some sand dunes make booming sounds?
Because countless similar sand grains can slide together and vibrate in step. On certain dry dunes, a layer of sand suddenly avalanches down a steep slope. Grains of similar size rub and move together, creating vibrations that reinforce one another. The dune can produce a deep hum or boom that lasts for seconds.
