Why do salt flats crack into giant polygons?

Because drying salt crust shrinks, cracks and reorganises as salty water moves below it. Salt flats lose water under intense sun. The crust contracts and cracks. Meanwhile, very salty water circulates through the ground and can deposit more salt along crack edges. Repeated drying and salt movement help create the striking honeycomb pattern.
