Why are deep ocean sinkholes called blue holes?

Because deep water absorbs more red light and often looks intensely dark blue from above. Blue holes are large underwater caves or sinkholes. Their deep, clear water absorbs longer red wavelengths more strongly, while blue light remains more visible. The sharp contrast with shallow turquoise water can make the opening look like a dark blue circle.
