Why does underwater lava form rounded pillows?
Because seawater chills the outside of each lava bulge while hot lava keeps pushing from within. When basaltic lava erupts underwater, its outer skin cools almost instantly into dark rock. Hot liquid lava still presses forward and breaks through, creating another rounded lobe. Repeating this process builds stacks of bulbous shapes called pillow lava.
