Why do some desert rocks have a dark shiny coating?
Because extremely thin layers of clay and metal oxides slowly build on exposed surfaces. Desert varnish forms over long periods on stable rock faces. Windblown clay and compounds containing manganese and iron collect in a very thin coating, helped by moisture and microscopic activity. The surface darkens even though the rock underneath may be much lighter.
