Why does frozen ground sometimes form circles and polygons?
Because repeated freezing and thawing slowly sorts soil, stones and ice. In very cold regions, water in soil freezes and expands. As seasons repeat, frost heave pushes particles upward and sideways. Stones and finer soil can gradually separate into rings, stripes or polygons, creating patterned ground without anyone arranging the pieces.
