How can an icicle grow downward under sea ice?
When extremely cold, salty water sinks and freezes seawater around its path. As sea ice forms, much of its salt is pushed into pockets of dense brine. This brine can drain downward at temperatures below the surrounding seawater's freezing point. Seawater freezes around the descending stream, building a hollow ice tube called a brinicle.
