How can rafts of rock float across the ocean?
Because pumice is full of gas-filled holes that can make fresh pieces buoyant. Explosive volcanic eruptions can produce pumice packed with tiny bubbles. Large amounts may enter the sea together and float, forming a pumice raft. Winds and currents can carry these rough stones for enormous distances before enough water enters their pores.
