Why do some cliffs look like bundles of stone columns?

Because thick lava can shrink into regular cracks as it cools. A large lava flow cools from its surfaces inward. Cooling rock contracts and develops cracks that spread through the lava. Under suitable conditions, the cracks meet in roughly polygonal patterns, often producing long five- or six-sided columns packed tightly together.
