People & Places
Why did people carve homes and rooms into soft rock?
Because workable rock can provide shelter, stable temperatures and protection using local material. In places with soft volcanic stone or sandstone, people have cut rooms directly into cliffs and hillsides. Thick rock walls change temperature slowly, keeping interiors cooler by day and warmer at night. Carving also avoids transporting large amounts of building material.
