Why do some old market streets have roofs overhead?
Because covered lanes protect shoppers and goods from fierce sun, rain or snow. Many historic markets developed along narrow streets packed with small shops. Roofs, awnings or vaulted covers create shade and shelter, making trade more comfortable in difficult weather. The enclosed form can also turn a street into a distinct, busy public place.
