Why do cereal pieces sometimes clump together in milk?

Because floating pieces bend the liquid surface and slide toward matching curves. Surface tension makes the milk surface curve slightly around a floating cereal piece. Nearby pieces create their own curves. When the shapes match, surface forces can pull the pieces together. The same effect can draw cereal toward the side of the bowl.
