Why do sunspots look dark on the bright Sun?
Because sunspots are cooler than the glowing surface around them. Strong magnetic fields in a sunspot tangle the movement of hot plasma and reduce how much heat reaches the visible surface. The spot is still extremely hot and bright, but the surrounding Sun is hotter and brighter, so the cooler patch looks dark by contrast.
