Why does the Sun grow giant glowing loops?
Because hot charged gas follows curved magnetic field lines above the surface. The Sun's magnetic field can arch high into its atmosphere. Electrically charged plasma moves along these invisible magnetic paths, outlining them with glowing gas. The result is a coronal loop that may tower thousands of kilometres above the solar surface.
