How can one day on Mercury last longer than its year?

Mercury rotates slowly while travelling around the Sun relatively quickly. Mercury takes about 88 Earth days to orbit the Sun, but it turns slowly on its axis. Its rotation and orbit combine in an unusual rhythm, so from one sunrise to the next about 176 Earth days pass: two Mercury years.
