Why does Enceladus spray water into space?

Because cracks near its south pole connect to water beneath the icy surface. Saturn's moon Enceladus hides a global ocean under ice. Near the south pole, long warm fractures provide pathways upward. Water vapour, ice grains and other material burst through these cracks and form enormous plumes above the moon.
