Why is Europa covered in long cracks?
Because Jupiter's gravity repeatedly flexes the icy moon and stresses its surface. Europa follows a slightly stretched orbit around Jupiter. The giant planet's gravity pulls with changing strength, flexing the moon. Stress builds in the outer ice and can split or shift the surface, producing the long bands and fractures seen across Europa.
