Why do dark storms appear and disappear on Neptune?
Because enormous weather systems form in Neptune's fast, changing atmosphere. Neptune's dark spots are giant atmospheric vortices, somewhat like huge rotating storms. Winds and surrounding clouds change over time, so a vortex can drift, weaken or vanish while another forms elsewhere. Spacecraft and telescopes have watched different dark spots come and go.
