Why do some moons orbit their planets backwards?

Because some moons may have been captured after forming somewhere else. Most large moons travel in the same direction their planet rotates because they formed nearby. A moon on a backward, or retrograde, orbit may have been captured later. Its unusual path can be a clue that it began somewhere else in the Solar System.
