Why are some asteroids more like piles of rubble than solid rocks?

Because broken fragments can gather loosely under their own weak gravity. Collisions can smash an asteroid into many pieces without sending every fragment away forever. If the pieces remain close, their shared gravity can pull them back together. The rebuilt object may contain boulders, dust and large empty spaces instead of one solid interior.
