Why do comets sometimes break into several pieces?
Because heat, spinning and internal pressure can weaken their fragile icy bodies. A comet is a mixture of ice, dust and rock. As it nears the Sun, gases escape and cracks can grow. Uneven heating or rapid rotation may add stress. If the weak nucleus cannot hold together, large chunks can separate.
