Why do bright rays stretch away from some Moon craters?
Because impacts throw pale crushed rock across the darker surface in long streaks. When an asteroid strikes the Moon, the explosion blasts material outward. Freshly broken lunar rock can be brighter than older space-weathered ground. Ejected debris lands in streaks radiating from the crater, creating bright rays that slowly fade over immense periods.
