Why do astronauts hook their feet under bars in space?

Because floating bodies need an anchor when astronauts want to push or work steadily. In microgravity, pushing on a tool can send the astronaut drifting backward. Foot loops, rails and restraints give the body something to brace against. With feet anchored, both hands can work more precisely and the astronaut does not float away from the task.
