How can a planet speed up a spacecraft without using rocket fuel?
By exchanging a tiny amount of orbital momentum as the spacecraft swings past. A spacecraft approaches a moving planet and falls through its gravity. The planet bends the spacecraft's path. From the Sun's point of view, the spacecraft can leave with more speed by taking an unimaginably tiny amount of the planet's orbital momentum.
