Space
How do spacecraft know which way they are pointing?
By photographing stars and matching their patterns with a stored sky map. A star tracker is a small, precise camera. It sees a pattern of bright stars and compares their positions with a catalogue in the spacecraft's computer. Once the pattern is identified, the spacecraft can calculate its exact orientation in space.
