How can Earth hear a spacecraft billions of kilometres away?
By using enormous antennas and extremely sensitive receivers to collect a very faint radio signal. A distant spacecraft sends radio waves with limited power. By the time they reach Earth, the signal is extraordinarily weak. Giant dish antennas gather as much radio energy as possible, while electronics separate the coded message from natural background noise.
