Why are some radio telescopes shaped like enormous bowls?
Because a large curved dish gathers faint radio waves and reflects them toward one receiver. Radio waves from space can be incredibly weak. A wide dish intercepts waves across a large area. Its curved shape redirects them toward a small detector, concentrating the signal. Larger collecting areas help astronomers study fainter and more distant radio sources.
