Why are neutron stars so unbelievably dense?
Because a massive star's core collapses and squeezes matter into an extraordinarily compact object. When certain massive stars explode, gravity crushes the remaining core. Electrons and protons are forced together, creating matter dominated by neutrons. A large amount of stellar mass becomes packed into a sphere only about the size of a city.
