Why do some asteroids travel beside a planet without hitting it?
Because they gather near stable gravitational regions that move around the Sun with the planet. A planet and the Sun create special regions where gravitational effects and orbital motion balance. Asteroids near certain Lagrange points can stay roughly 60 degrees ahead of or behind the planet, travelling in the same orbit for long periods.
