How can spinning too fast pull a small asteroid apart?
Loose material can escape when outward motion overcomes the asteroid's weak gravity. Many small asteroids are loosely bound piles of rock. As rotation speeds up, surface pieces experience stronger outward motion. If the asteroid's gravity and material strength cannot hold them, rocks may slide away or the body can split into separate pieces.
