Why were many Roman roads slightly higher in the middle?

Because a crowned surface helped rainwater run toward the sides. Road builders often shaped the surface with a gentle rise along the centre. Rain could flow toward drains or ditches instead of sitting in the wheel path. Layers of stone underneath added stability, although Roman road designs varied across the empire.
