History & Time
How did ancient Egyptians measure the Nile without modern gauges?
By using marked wells, stairs or columns called nilometers to record water height. The annual Nile flood strongly affected farming. Nilometers let officials compare the river's level with marks or steps. A high or low reading could warn of difficult harvest conditions and helped communities plan for the season ahead.
