How did the Inca record information with knots?

By tying different knots onto cords arranged in carefully organised groups. Quipu were systems of cords used in the Inca world. Knot type, position and cord structure could represent numbers, especially in a decimal system. Specialists used them to manage information such as quantities, labour and stored goods across a vast empire.
