How did Polynesian navigators cross oceans without compasses?
By combining stars, ocean swells, winds, wildlife and deep knowledge of routes. Expert wayfinders memorised the rising and setting positions of stars and watched the direction of long ocean swells. Clouds, birds and floating vegetation offered extra clues near land. Navigation worked as a connected system of observations learned over generations.
