History & Time
Why did ancient people write on wax tablets?
Because soft wax could be scratched with a stylus and smoothed flat for reuse. A wooden frame held a thin layer of dark wax. The pointed end of a stylus scratched letters into the surface. Its broad end could rub the wax smooth again, making tablets useful for notes, lessons, accounts and messages.
