History & Time
Why did fires sometimes preserve ancient clay tablets?
Because intense heat accidentally baked soft clay into harder ceramic. Many clay tablets were originally dried rather than fully fired. When a building burned, the disaster could heat tablets to high temperatures. The clay hardened, making some tablets more durable and helping their writing survive underground for thousands of years.
