How can cracks in some ancient Roman concrete partly seal themselves?

Because reactive lime-rich pieces can dissolve and form new minerals when water enters small cracks. Some Roman concrete contains bright lime fragments. When a crack reaches one and water enters, calcium-rich material can react and move into the damaged space. New mineral crystals may grow there, helping plug small cracks over time.
