History & Time
How did ancient underground channels carry water without pumps?
By following a gentle downhill slope from an aquifer toward farms and settlements. Qanat builders dug a long, slightly sloping tunnel from groundwater in higher land. Gravity moved the water downhill. Vertical shafts provided air, access and places to remove excavated soil. Keeping the channel underground reduced evaporation in hot, dry regions.
