Why did ancient aqueducts need such careful gentle slopes?

Because gravity could keep water moving only if the channel consistently descended. An aqueduct channel had to fall from its source toward the destination. Too flat and water might stagnate; too steep and fast flow could damage structures. Surveyors used simple instruments and patient measurements to maintain small changes in height across long distances.
