History & Time
How did old lighthouses make one flame visible far out at sea?
By using curved mirrors and later special lenses to gather and direct more light. A single lamp sends light in every direction, wasting much of it. Reflectors placed behind a flame bounced light seaward. Later Fresnel lenses bent and concentrated light into powerful beams, allowing mariners to see a lighthouse from much farther away.
