History & Time
Why did some stagecoaches hang their bodies on leather straps?
Because thick leather supports could flex and soften jolts from rough roads. Early roads were full of ruts and stones. Some coaches suspended the passenger body on broad leather thoroughbraces instead of rigidly fixing it to the axles. The straps stretched and swung, reducing the sharpness of bumps, although the ride could still be very uncomfortable.
