How did early fire engines push water without motors?

By using teams of people to operate large hand pumps. Before powered pumps, firefighters used machines with long handles. Crews moved the handles up and down, driving pistons that drew water in and forced it through a hose or nozzle. The engine's pressure depended on many people pumping together steadily.
