How did early calculating machines add numbers with gears?

By turning numbered wheels so carrying into the next place happened mechanically. In a gear calculator, each wheel represented a digit. Turning one wheel through a full cycle triggered a mechanism that advanced the next wheel by one. Linked place values allowed the machine to perform addition without a person manually writing every intermediate step.
